Based in San Francisco, Atakan Cetinsoy is the Vice President of Predictive Applications for BigML, which offers a category leading Machine Learning software platform. In this capacity, he works closely with the company’s customers and prospects in identifying predictive use cases, proposing machine learning solutions as well as deploying and measuring them. Atakan has 20 years of hi-tech product management and product marketing experience with both global brands and venture funded startups including Apple, Strands, Deem(Rearden Commerce) and Yahoo!. Atakan holds a B.S. degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Bogazici University in Istanbul and an M.B.A. from The University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business.
In the last decade we have witnessed the phenomenon of Data Deluge, which can be summed up as an unprecedented rise in the volume, variety, veracity and the velocity of data. The excitement of the promises of this new wave has been dampened by reports of businesses struggling to recoup their investments into heavy infrastructure that store and process such data. As of 2016, the focus has decidedly shifted towards analytics and more specifically Machine Learning as the “killer app” that will deliver the missing tangible return on investment.
How so? To put it simply, Machine Learning enables a second wave of business automation powered by smart applications. The first wave was mainly about the automation of commonplace business processes embodied in the popularity of ERP, CRM, HRM type enterprise systems. After mass adoption, nowadays the benefits of such systems have reached a permanent plateau no longer being considered competitive advantages. The second wave of automation is all about decision automation, which explains why advanced analytics and predictive technologies are at the crux this time. These technologies not only have a voracious appetite on all kinds of data, but more importantly they are capable of improving themselves with little to no human intervention. Thus, automating decision making processes have become a real possibility with a remarkable impact on profitability. By harnessing Machine Learning, organizations have a shot at discovering whole new ways of increasing revenue, decreasing costs and controlling risks. This lecture will focus on the impact of these new trends on how businesses are reorganizing themselves and the corresponding new demands they bring about in the job market.
